Sleepiz AG secures $1M together with Acconeer and the University of Gothenburg to create the future of sleep apnea diagnostics
ZURICH – Sleepiz AG, a Swiss medical technology start-up, announced today that it has received $500k funding to enable the future of sleep diagnostics through novel three-dimensional radar technology.
Funded by the European Union’s HORIZON 2020 EUROSTAR grant, the collaboration is between Sleepiz AG and Acconeer, a Swedish radar sensor company, in partnership with University of Gothenburg’s Sleep Medicine Center. A total of $1M has been granted for the research between Sleepiz and Acconeer.
Sleepiz is delighted to join forces with Acconeer, a leader in radar sensor, to co-develop a customized radar chip for improved functionality and features. Sleepiz has recently entered the market with its first medical device, the Sleepiz One, which was developed together with the medical community. By combining expertise in both medical and radar industries, the collaboration will develop the next generation contactless device for diagnosis and monitoring, validated by University of Gothenburg’s Sleep Medicine Center. The radar will enable better personalized therapy through a novel three-dimensional monitoring approach, providing more insights and standards than the current state of the art. The project is due to begin in May 2021 and will be carried out for three years.
“For Sleepiz, such recognition and trust by the European Union, allows to envision the future of healthcare that is deeply rooted in the power of medicine and technology combined. Our goal for this collaboration with Acconeer and University of Gothenburg is to continuously progress the status quo and create the next generation of our sleep monitoring device that will improve people’s lives with the most innovative technology available. All at the comfort of one’s home.”
- Soumya Dash, the CEO and co-founder of Sleepiz AG.
Sleepiz AG (Ltd.) is a Zürich based startup with a mission to provide patient-centric disease management through seamless integration of contactless monitoring into people’s homes. Sleepiz leverages the power of sleep insights with a device that is simply placed on the bedside table. The device operates in a non-contact fashion and measures movements originating from heart contractions and breathing patterns, as well as body motions with medical grade accuracy.
While currently focusing on respiratory illnesses, Sleepiz aims to improve people’s lives by creating the future of healthcare. By making use of wireless millimeter wave technology, sensor fusion and artificial intelligence, in the future Sleepiz will not only be able to diagnose sleep disorders but also perform long-term monitoring. Thereby, the progression of chronic diseases will be monitored to allow faster intervention and better treatment.
With ground-breaking technology, Acconeer has developed a radar sensor that opens a new world of interaction. Acconeer Micro Radar Sensor, with low power consumption, high precision, small size and high robustness, is a 60GHz robust and cost-effective sensor for detection, distance measurement, motion detection and camera-supported applications with low power consumption. Acconeer combines the advantage of low power consumption with highly accurate pulsed radar systems of coherent radar, all integrated into a component with a surface area of only 28 mm2. The radar sensor can be included in a range of mobile consumer products, from smartphones to wearables, but also in areas such as robots, drones, the Internet of Things, healthcare, automotive, industrial robots and security and monitoring systems. Acconeer is a semiconductor company and, as a business model, sells hardware to manufacturers of consumer electronics products.
