The Right Bite CPD incorporates Sleepiz sleep screenings into their offering for better outcomes in neuromuscular dentistry (NMD)

Dr. Roshni Srivastava

Interview with Dr. Aishwarrya Chandran

August 2021, Sleepiz Ltd., Pune: Earlier this year, we had shared the exciting news that we were one of the winners of the EUREKA INNOWWIDE Programme, an EU initiative focused on exploring the viability of emerging markets. As we were already present in India for our development operations, we used this opportunity to our advantage. We had the chance to pilot Sleepiz in the Indian market and work closely together with Dr. Rajesh Raveendranathan and his clinic, The Right Bite CPC, a Bangalore-based treatment center for permanent relief from TMJ Disorders, Sleep Apnea and Migraines. After a successful pilot, Dr. Rajesh has chosen to incorporate Sleepiz into his practice and has become one of our first customers in India.

Recently our Dr. Roshni Srivastava, Clinical Operation Manager at Sleepiz Ltd. spoke with Dr. Aishwarrya Chandran, who works with Dr. Rajesh, about their approach to dental care and how Sleepiz can be a valuable addition to neuromuscular dentistry.

Dr. Roshni Srivastava: At Right Bite you have a very holistic approach to dental and healthcare. How would you describe it?

Dr. Aishwarrya Chandran: The Right Bite Craniofacial Pain Care LLP promotes the science of neuromuscular dentistry (NMD) through its network of The Right Bite CPC® centers, which are especially dedicated to patients who suffer from temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). At The Right Bite CPC, we aim to work on the real cause of patient’s pain rather than giving them symptomatic relief. We also aim to promote and create awareness among the people as well as doctors about neuromuscular dentistry.

Dr. Roshni Srivastava: What is neuromuscular dentistry?

Dr. Aishwarrya Chandran: Neuromuscular dentists focus on correcting jaw alignment problems that cause the lower and upper teeth to come together in occlusion. Neuromuscular dentistry includes the teeth, but also the jaw bones, the ligaments, the muscles, the temporomandibular joint and the brain, which provides control of the entire body system. We most often treat very painful conditions. The mission and vision of The Right Bite CPC is to practice neuromuscular dentistry in India and beyond.

Dr. Roshni Srivastava: How can Sleepiz contribute to neuromuscular dentistry?

Dr. Aishwarrya Chandran: As mentioned at The Right Bite CPC, we aim to work on the real cause of patient’s pain. To do so, it helps us to get a deeper understanding of the patient. Sleep provides many insights on a patient’s condition. We can achieve the best results by measuring a patient’s health if the patient is at home and sleeps in their usual environment, exactly what Sleepiz offers.

We currently use sleep screening devices, however with Sleepiz we get even more detailed sleep reports and can offer a more comfortable experience to our patients at the same time.

Dr. Roshni Srivastava: A few weeks back you tested the Sleepiz device. What were the factors that convinced you to work with Sleepiz?

Dr. Aishwarrya Chandran: We wanted something minimalistic, instead of asking our patients to do a level 1 Polysomnography (PSG). Sleepiz’s parameters go hand in hand with what we require in neuromuscular dentistry and can help us in identifying problems that arise solely during sleep time.

We appreciate that Sleepiz offers a remote solution, so that sleep screenings an easily be done from home. Considering the expected COVID-19 third wave in India, we now have the confidence that we can continue our operations without disruption.

In addition, we have expansion plans, to offer neuromuscular dentistry not only in India but also in other South Asian countries and the UAE. Partnering with an international start-up, which is likeminded in terms of expansion plans, helps us to work on this mission.

Dr. Roshni Srivastava: How will you use Sleepiz in your clinics?

Dr. Aishwarrya Chandran: We will have an initial assessment, followed by a 6-month check-up and then a final check-up after the treatment has been completed. This takes approximately one to one and a half years in total. Through such practice, the treatment can be adjusted and optimized for the best patient outcomes.

Dr. Roshni Srivastava: What are the key benefits for your patients when you work with Sleepiz?

Dr. Aishwarrya Chandran: Most of our patients come with a lot of pain and tension. Undertaking a study in a sleep lab, or sleeping with multiple cables attached to their body, is out of the picture. So far patients love that the device operates in a non-contact fashion and can be used at the comfort of their home. This way treatment becomes seamless and effective.

We thank Dr. Rajesh and Dr. Aishwarrya Chandran, as well as the rest of the Right Bite CPC team, for their contributions and a successful kick-off!
